UK and Eire Glaucoma Society Annual Meeting

(RCOphth-approved CPD and GOC-approved CETs)

3rd – 4th December 2010

Church House, Westminster, London

Dear colleagues,

Past annual meetings of the Society have been great successes and have been focused on research. From this year, the scope and format of our annual meeting have been changed to widen the remit of the society to include service delivery and education.

It is a great pleasure for me to announce the new features of the 2010 meeting:

  • A new format over two days instead of one
  • Topics of interest to all eye care professionals
  • Presentations by heads of research teams in the UK, Eire and Austria to provide a better idea of the breadth, depth and quality of research in the UK, Eire and another EU country
  • A panel discussion with European colleagues to identify strategies for stimulating research collaboration within the EU and for attracting research funding
  • Two world-class keynote lectures instead of one
    • Measuring Progression in Glaucoma by Bal Chauhan (Canada)
    • Mechanisms for Cupping and Axon Loss in Ageing and Glaucoma by Claude Burgoyne (USA)
  • A symposium on ‘Glaucoma service delivery in the 21st century’ followed by a panel discussion on ‘How to optimize healthcare delivery in the 21st century?’ involving leading ophthalmologists and optometrists
  • In addition to the prizes for the best paper and poster presentations, there will be travel grants for the runners-up
  • A welcome dinner on 3rd December, which will offer a great opportunity for networking. This will be preceded by a pre-dinner piano recital.

As with last year, I am delighted to announce that the Glaucoma Society Research Awards for a total amount of £50,000 will be presented at the meeting as a result of the generous support of the International Glaucoma Association (IGA).

This year’s meeting continues and strengthens the multi-disciplinary tradition of UKEGS and I hope that this year’s programme will be stimulating and thought-provoking across a wide range of topics and that the occasion will provide a forum for networking and discussion.

I very much look forward to welcoming you to this year’s meeting.
